Portland, Maine is hands down one of my favorite cities in New England. Having explored this charming city numerous times, I’m excited to share some of my favorite things to do in Portland.

Whether you’re drawn by the historical landmarks, the vibrant art scene, or the mouth-watering restaurants, this coastal city will easily find a place in your heart.

Indulge in Portland’s Culinary Scene

Portland is a food lover’s dream, and it’s not just seafood – there are plenty of diverse restaurants to explore, and you’ll find both vegan and vegetarian-friendly restaurants in Portland. 

Marvel at the Portland Head Light

No trip to Portland is complete without a trip to the Portland Head Light, Maine’s oldest lighthouse, nestled in the scenic Fort Williams Park. The views here are stunning, making it a paradise for photographers and nature lovers. 

Take a leisurely walk around the park and spend a few hours taking in the tranquility of the crashing waves. If it’s a nice day, there are plenty of tables for a picnic. Just remember to leave the spot as pristine as you found it.

Stroll Down Commercial Street

This iconic waterfront street is bustling with unique boutiques, upscale shops, and various restaurants. Commercial Street will surely be on the tour itinerary if you opt to do a guided tour of Portland. 

It’s a fascinating place not just for the juxtaposition of no-frills restaurants with higher-end spots but also for the blend of people from all walks of life.

You’ll find fishermen hauling their catch of the day to the local fish market in the early morning and bachelorette parties slipping into a bar for their next beverage in the evening.

It’s a wonderful way to witness how tourism and day-to-day life in Portland coexist side by side.

Potatoes and donuts…what? This spot is well known in Maine for its step away from a traditional donut recipe by incorporating riced potatoes into its donuts.

A short walk from the waterfront brings you to Old Port, a picturesque district with cobblestone streets and a rustic charm. I love to wander these streets without a plan, discovering cozy boutiques and local art at my own pace.

Portland’s art scene is vibrant and accessible. Murals and street art installations can be found around the city, and the Creative Portland App is a fantastic resource to guide you. 

You can also pop into the various art galleries. Some of my favorites are: Portland Art Gallery, Roux and Cyr International Fine Art, and Greenhut Galleries. 

The Portland Museum of Art is another great spot, with free admission every third Thursday of the month.

Sip Wine at Friends & Family Wine Bar

If you’re a wine lover, like me, then you’ll enjoy a stop at this bar. This airy and bright wine bar is a great place to purchase a bottle or grab a seat at the bar and enjoy some wine by the glass. Not sure what to get? Ask the bartender what they’re loving at the moment.

Go Shopping at the Various Boutiques

When it comes to shopping in Portland, there is no shortage of charming boutiques for you to pop into. Bobbles and Lace, also located in Boston, is one of my personal favorites. 

You’ll find plenty of shopping within Old Port. This area is full of boutiques and quaint shops, offering everything from handmade jewelry to bespoke clothing and home decor.

It’s the perfect place to find a special souvenir or a gift for someone back home—or perhaps a little something for yourself!

Portland, Maine, is a true haven for craft beer enthusiasts, boasting an impressive array of over 25 breweries in the Greater Portland area.

Each brewery offers a unique take on classic and innovative brews, making it a great destination for those looking to try some different craft beer. Besides the local breweries, you can also find taprooms with multiple breweries on tap, such as Novare Res Bier Cafe.

Portland is a very walkable city, so it’s best to stay right in the heart of things. That being said, I have two options for hotels I’ve personally stayed at and enjoyed.

The Francis Hotel & Spa

Nestled in the heart of Portland, The Francis Hotel & Spa offers a quaint yet luxurious stay.

The rooms are spacious and comfortable. For those evenings when you prefer to unwind without going up to your room, the hotel provides a cozy fireside seating area in the lobby.

Additionally, guests can indulge in spa services and enjoy added perks like having breakfast and freshly brewed coffee from the nearby Tandem Coffee Shop delivered directly to their rooms.

The Press Hotel

Located in the Old Port district, The Press Hotel occupies a building steeped in history, formerly housing the Portland Press Herald.

When to Visit Portland

I’m always a huge fan of shoulder season (the months surrounding peak season) because you can enjoy mild temperatures without the crowds.

I personally recommend visiting Portland in the spring or fall. That being said, Portland is a destination that you can visit year-round – depending on what you’re looking to do. 

How Long to Spend in Portland

Deciding how long to stay in Portland is completely up to you, depending on what you want to see and do.

While getting a taste of Portland in just one day is possible, a longer visit is worthwhile if your schedule allows. 

Spending two or three days in Portland allows you to explore the city at your own pace. 

How to Get Around Portland

Navigating Portland is a breeze, especially for those who prefer to explore on foot.

As a highly walkable city, many of Portland’s key attractions, including the bustling Old Port district, the scenic waterfront, and a variety of shops and restaurants, are easily accessible without the need for a car. 

If you’re looking to travel a bit further, the city does have Uber, as well as public buses. 

For those who want the most flexibility, consider bringing your car. Though you likely won’t need it for the majority of your trip.
