A trip to Norway without seeing the Fjords is like going to Paris and not seeing the Eiffel Tower. You just don't do that. Even if you only have a short amount of time, it's possible to get a taste of the fjords on a day trip. If you're just as obsessed with being on the water as I am, I highly recommend the Sognefjord in a Nutshell tour.
How to Book Sognefjord in a Nutshell
The word "tour" is slight overstatement here. This is less of a tour and more a bunch of different modes of transportation put together but it's definitely worth it. It's also a lot easier to book through the website instead of trying to purchase each leg independently.
You can start your route in either Oslo or Bergen. Since we were headed to Oslo next, we started in Bergen and ended the day in Oslo. If this is your plan, I do recommend breaking the trip up into two days, if you can, since it's a lot to do in one day. We started out at 8:00 in the morning and didn't reach Oslo until close to midnight. Trust me, I did not look cute by the time we got off the train. A roundtrip tour from Bergen is a lot more doable.
When you go to book your trip, you will have the option of a "day trip" or "tour with overnight stay". It's extremely user friendly and pretty self explanatory.
What the Tour Consists of
Express Boat Through the Sognefjord
We started our tour in Bergen at 8:00 and boarded the boat to Flam. The first couple of hours were uneventful but once we entered the Sognefjord I was immediately entranced. Though the weather was less than ideal, the waterway was still incredibly stunning. I spent most of my time outside, semi freezing to death. It was oh so worth it.
Stopover in Flam
We reached Flam at 1:30. If you've seen Frozen (there shouldn't be an if about that. I mean, who hasn't seen Frozen?) then you will absolutely love Flam. That is the town Frozen is based off of. It's perfectly quaint with restaurants and shops made and has a very mountain cabin-y feel. We spent our time here drinking some good ole Norwegian beer with two new friends we met on the boat. Those bartenders do not mess around. Their flights were some hefty pours. Of course, I wasn't complaining.
Flam Railway
We boarded the train at 4:04 to Myrdal along the Flam Railway. This may have been my favorite part of the tour. The hour long train ride is breathtakingly scenic. The train stops briefly at the Kjosfossen Waterfall where you witness the mythical Huldra, a seductive forest creature found in Scandinavian folklore, dancing.
Final Leg to Oslo
From Myrdal we boarded the train to Oslo and enjoyed the scenic 6 hour train ride. It truly was a one of a kind experience and a fantastic, jam packed day!
The Sognefjord in a Nutshell tour is a must for any trip to Norway!
