Virginia is one of my absolute favorite states. From colorful fall foliage to an abundance of wine to rich history, there’s something here for everyone. The Shenandoah Valley is a particularly special part of Virginia and is absolutely beautiful year round. If you only have a short time to explore the area, here’s 5 things to in the Shenandoah Valley

Stay at a Getaway House

Located just 30 minutes from the Shenandoah National Park, Getaway is the perfect escape. Cozy and intimate, these cabins are perfect for a solo trip or with a loved one. You’ll find yourself refreshed and recharged after your Getaway. Read all about my stay in one of these tiny houses here.

Visit the Luray Caverns

I truly have never experienced anything quite like these caverns. Walking through these caverns is an absolutely surreal experience. Your entrance ticket includes a guided tour and you’ll learn all about the history of the caverns. Be prepared to pick your jaw off the ground as you explore. I didn’t even know it was possible that nature could create something as unique as these caverns.

Spend an Afternoon at Early Mountain Vineyards

You will fall head over heels for this winery. Trust me. Start your afternoon with a tasting. Splurge for the premium tasting where you will get a chance to try 9 various wines. It’s going to be incredibly difficult to pick just one favorite. Then, grab a table either inside the cozy dining area or step outside to enjoy spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Grab a glass of your favorite wine from the tasting or go for a wine flight (if you’re like me and loved so many). Pair that with any of their small plates for a perfect afternoon.

Go for a Hike

The Shenandoah National Park has plenty of hikes of varying difficulty levels and durations. A majority of them offer stunning vistas and a chance to fully immerse yourself in nature. If you aren’t up for a hike, you can easily drive through the park and stop at various lookout points.

Make the Trip to Charlottesville

It’s easy to spend a day exploring Charlottesville. Be sure to spend some time walking the Downtown Mall where you can explore the little boutiques and grab a bite to eat. Of course a visit to Jefferson’s Monticello is an absolute must. And finally, round out your day with a trip to Carter Mountain Orchard where getting an apple cider donut (or two or three) while you enjoy the view is the best end to your day.

Ever since I can remember I've loved to travel. As I get older, travel continues to be a priority and I find myself with an insatiable desire to travel as much as I possibly can. My travel style has shifted from jam packing my trips with the top sights and hopping from city to city to slower travel. I loves exploring lesser known destinations, connecting to the culture through food and wine, and supporting local-owned businesses. Every trip I take is an elevated adventure.
