I left a piece of my heart in Slovenia. Okay, before you say anything, you’re right I tend to say that about most places I go to but this time I really truly mean it. Slovenia is now in my top 5 favorite countries. There you go. Now you believe me. And if you don’t, you will shortly because here are the top 7 reasons why you NEED to visit Slovenia right now.
Tiny adorable capital city Ljubljana
I’ll be honest, I’m not a fan of a lot of European capital cities. They can be large, overwhelming, and frankly a little drab (controversial opinion??). Ljubljana is nothing like that. First of all, it’s easy to walk around as the city center is compact and has the cutest pedestrian streets. Colorful buildings, gorgeous architecture, a river running through the center, an enchanting castle, beautiful bridges….need I continue?
Slovenia has fairytale like scenery
It’s not just Ljubljana that looks like it’s straight out of a movie. There are so many places to visit in Slovenia and all of them look like a dream. We rented a car and did a road trip and could not stop ourselves from gaping out the window the entire team. Seriously it made keeping my eyes on the road just a tad bit challenging. With places like Lake Bled and Soca River Valley, someone is going to have to drag you out of this country because you won’t want to leave
The multitude of extreme sports
There are so many things to do in Slovenia. While we were there we went white water rafting in the lovely Soca River Valley and had the surreal experience of paragliding over Lake Bohinj. There’s also zip-lining, bungee jumping, and more Trust me, you’ll be anything but bored in Slovenia.
Fantastic Slovenian wine
Slovenia has a long history of producing wine. Whether you order a glass with your meal or take a trip to visit one of the vineyards that offer a wine tour, you won’t be sorry. Honestly, this should be enough reason for you to book your flight to Slovenia. Who doesn’t love great quality, affordable, and delicious wine? Monsters, that’s who.
It’s affordable
We were surprised at how cheap everything was. To put it in perspective, we ordered mimosas that were generous pours made with freshly squeezed orange juice and they were only $1.50. Did your jaw drop? The rest of the trip we measured everything in mimosa currency. “Do you really need that…that’s like 5 mimosas”
They have incredible coffee
I have fallen in love with so many places that always had one drawback: weak, tasteless coffee. How people even survive in these places is beyond me. The first coffee spot we found in Ljubljana and we were hooked. I’m talking we went back and ordered another cup after we squealed with delight. Pretty sure the barista thought we were nuts but coffee does that to you. Oh and of course it was super cheap.
The food is delicious
As a vegetarian finding good food when I travel can be difficult. Luckily because Slovenia is so damn perfect, I had no issues finding flavorful, hearty dishes. My absolute favorite dish was these dumplings stuffed with cottage cheese and then drenched in a rich mushroom sauce. Ugh, I want them right now.
