I’ve tried to deny my love for California. National parks? Big deal. Scenic drives with breathtaking views? Eh. Delicious wineries a stone throw away? Okay okay fine. Truth is, I’m just jealous that I don’t live there. There I said it. California has it all, including fairytale towns straight out of a storybook. I’m talking about Carmel. Just two hours south of San Francisco, Carmel is an enchanting town you will fall head over heels for, Disney princess style. And the best part? It’s totally doable to get a great taste of Carmel and the surrounding area in a weekend. Here’s how to spend a weekend in Carmel.

Before You Go

Carmel is gorgeous year round. To beat the crowd, consider going in the winter.

If you are just exploring the town of Carmel, a car isn’t necessary as the city is compact and easily walkable. However, if you want to explore the surrounding areas (which I highly recommend you do) you will need a car.

How to Get to Carmel

There are a few options to get to Carmel. The three major airports are Monterey County Airport, San Jose International, and San Francisco International Airport. San Francisco to Carmel will take you approximately 2 hours with no traffic so plan accordingly!

Best Hotels in Carmel

Hotel Carmel

There are some beautiful hotels in the heart of Carmel but my favorite and top recommendation is Hotel Carmel. You can’t beat the location of this quaint boutique hotel. Steps away from all Carmel has to offer, this is the ideal hotel for your getaway. The large spacious rooms with private balconies are outfitted with everything you need for your stay, including coffee that you can brew the moment you wake up. Start each morning with their bagel bar, complete with a variety of freshly baked bagels and homemade schmears and end the evening with a complimentary happy hour.

Don’t worry this is more of a walk than a hike. The trail will lead you to stunning vistas and even the opportunity to glimpse wildlife like seals and sea otters.

Wine Tasting at Folktale Winery

You can easily spend an afternoon at this beautiful winery. Be sure to sample a variety of their wines. I’d also recommend coming here for lunch and taking time to explore the grounds and the rooms. Perfect for a gorgeous day.

Best Restaurants in Carmel

Cultura Comida y Bebida

A blend of Oaxacan flavors with a fresh California flair, this restaurant is a must during your weekend in Carmel. Be sure to try one of their Mezcal creations and don’t leave without a warm bite of churros.

La Bicyclette

The highlight of this cozy restaurant are the pizzas. Seriously, you can not go wrong with each one of their flavorful pizzas. Pair it with a fresh, colorful salad and you’ll have yourself thinking…is it too crazy to come back here tomorrow?

Brophy’s Tavern

Deliciously executed pub fare, Brophy’s Tavern is a great spot for a low-key evening. Their truffle fries are to die for. For a main course, try their iconic fish and chips or go back to a childhood favorite and go for the grilled cheese and tomato bisque. Sinfully delicious.

Stationary

Bright and minimalistic, this cafe is perfect for a cup of coffee or a full brunch. I could easily eat my way through their entire menu.

Village Corner

A perfect lunch option with a beautifully inviting patio. Vegetarian or not, be sure to try their impossible burger. And don’t you dare leave without their Olallieberry Pie. Don’t try to be cute and share, trust me you’ll want the whole piece to yourself.

Ever since I can remember I've loved to travel. As I get older, travel continues to be a priority and I find myself with an insatiable desire to travel as much as I possibly can. My travel style has shifted from jam packing my trips with the top sights and hopping from city to city to slower travel. I loves exploring lesser known destinations, connecting to the culture through food and wine, and supporting local-owned businesses. Every trip I take is an elevated adventure.
