Babylonstoren Wine Club Review: Is It Worth It?

I’ll be honest. I love a good wine club. I’ve tried a few over the years and there’s nothing like opening your door and seeing a box of wines you know you’re going to love on your doorstep.

It’s that perfect combination of effortlessness (I mean what could be easier than simply opening your door) and surprise (what wines could the box possibly contain this time!?) that brings me so much joy.

Babylonstoren’s wine club is no exception, and in fact, it’s one of my favorite ones out there.

What It’s Like Getting a Babylonstoren Wine Club Box

I first visited Babylonstoren on a trip to South Africa and immediately fell in love with it. It’s not just a winery—it’s a full experience, with the farm, the gardens, and on-site restaurant.

I still think about the wines I had there, so when I found out they had a wine club that would ship to my door, I was genuinely thrilled.

My first reaction when the March shipment showed up was pure excitement. It felt like opening up a present. 

Inside the box was a Viognier, a Shiraz, a Malbec and an extra virgin olive oil from their farm.  One thing I love about this wine club is that it has three wine bottles plus a special gift every time. I mean, who doesn’t love that added element of surprise?

I especially loved that the gift was olive oil because Babylonstoren is so much more than a winery, it’s a working farm with an emphasis on sustainability so being able to get a little taste of all of that in one box is really special. 

Another big reason this wine club works for me is that it’s only once a quarter.

I’ve canceled a wine club before when I was living in Boston because it was just too much. It was four bottles every single month with wines that varied in quality, and suddenly we had more wine than we knew what to do with. We were living in a tiny apartment and honestly… where were we even supposed to put it all?

It started to feel like pressure to drink it quickly before the next shipment showed up.

This is the complete opposite of that.

Three bottles every few months feels so manageable. It’s just enough to enjoy, share, and look forward to without ever feeling like it’s piling up or that it’s the only wine you are drinking at all times. 

A Cabin Weekend with Great Wine

March’s shipment arrived just in time for a cabin weekend away with friends, and honestly, the timing couldn’t have been better.

There was a moment where I considered hoarding the wine for myself (hey, I’m only human) but I ultimately decided to share.

Cozy mountain vibes, a fireplace going, homemade meals, and long conversations over great wine? It doesn’t get much better than that.

We started with the Viognier, which was a wine most of us had never even heard of, and it instantly became a favorite. We took turns trying to pick out the notes—crisp, dried apricots, with just a hint of oak.

The Shiraz was completely different—earthy, a little leathery. It’s that red wine you always want to drink. Familiar yet distinct, rich but still really easy to enjoy. Too easy, actually, because the bottle was gone in no time.

And then we opened the Malbec with dinner which sparked a whole conversation when someone said:

“Wait… isn’t Malbec just from Argentina?”

Most of the group had never tried South African wines before, so it turned into a fun conversation about what makes them different and what we were tasting. It made the whole evening more memorable, getting to try something new together instead of just opening a bottle everyone already knew.

We used the olive oil on fresh bread we made and over pasta, and it ended up being one of those meals where everything just feels right. The kind that makes you pause for a second and just feel really grateful for the people you’re with.

Sigh. Maybe wine makes me a little sappy.

Either way, I love this wine club.

What You Actually Get (And Why I Think It’s Worth It)

It’s $100 per shipment, which, in my opinion, is a really good value because these are high quality wines at a fraction of the price point you’d think they’d be at.

I’ve tried other wine clubs that were:

• More expensive
• Charged for shipping on top
• Or sent wines that felt completely random

This is different.

You’re getting wines from one producer, which means there’s consistency. You know the quality is going to be there, and for me, that’s a big deal.

But that doesn’t mean it gets boring. There’s still that sense of discovery in each box, which is what makes it so fun.

Plus, they also release wines that are exclusive to wine club members, so you get to try bottles most people can’t.

And maybe tease your friends about it. Just kidding… be nice.

Why This Wine Club Works (When Others Don’t)

It’s Actually Manageable

Three bottles, once a quarter. That’s it.

You’re not overwhelmed, and you’re not scrambling to keep up. 

It also doesn’t feel like you’re suddenly only drinking wines from one place. It just mixes in really nicely with whatever else you’re already buying.

You Know the Wines Are Going to Be Good

This isn’t a mix of random producers where some hit and some miss.

Every bottle I’ve had from Babylonstoren has been such high quality and truly something I’ve enjoyed. 

It Feels Like a Treat, Not a Subscription

Between not knowing which wines you’re going to get, the extra gift, and the overall experience, it genuinely feels like something you get to open and not something you’re paying for just because you have to.

(Looking at you, Netflix… stop raising your prices.)

It’s Perfect for Sharing

What if every quarter when your box arrives, you turned it into a little wine night? Or did what I did and brought it along for a cabin weekend?

I love romanticizing the little moments in life, and sharing wine from a winery I genuinely love with people I care about is one of my favorite ways to do that.

It’s such an easy way to host without overthinking it.

Who This Wine Club Is For (And Who It’s Not)

This is perfect for you if:

• You want great wine without having to choose it yourself
• You want just a few bottles a quarter
• You like trying something a little different (like South African wines)
• You want something that feels curated, not random

It might not be for you if:

• You want full control over selecting every bottle
• You prefer a high-volume wine club
• You’re looking for wines from multiple regions instead of one producer

Can You Gift the Babylonstoren Wine Club?

Yes! And honestly, this would be such a fun gift. My friends know the key to my heart is some great wine.

The only thing to keep in mind is that it’s a recurring subscription, so you’ll just need to cancel or pause it when you’re ready to stop.

Is the Babylonstoren Wine Club Worth It?

For me, it absolutely is.

I’ve tried other wine clubs, and this is easily my favorite one. 

It hits that balance of:

• Quality for the price point
• Convenience
• And just enough surprise

I don’t have to wander through a wine shop scanning every bottle on Vivino until I’m completely overwhelmed.

Instead, I get to try bottles I might not have picked for myself, and it gives me an easy way to create those moments—whether it’s a dinner, a weekend away, or just a random night that turns into something more memorable.

And if I’m being honest… it’s hard to beat the feeling of that box showing up at your door.
